How Does It Work

Renewable energy is energy that is derived from naturally occurring sources that can be constantly replenished. Such as solar and wind power. This contrasts with energy sources like oil and coal, which rely on burning a material which must be found extracted and is not recreated.

Renewable energy is associated with environmentally friendly or green energy, since it largely involves the use of clean natural resources.

A 2.5kWp Solar PV system can produce approx 2100 kWh of electricity per year and generate approx £1300 of income and savings.

Why Use Solar Energy?

It really works!

Solar water heating systems collect free heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder. The panels don’t need direct sunlight to work as even on cloudy days we receive energy from indirect sunlight (diffuse radiation).

Cut your fuel bills

The system could cut your hot water bills by up to 90% during summer and 30% in the winter months. That could mean an annual saving of up to 70%*.

Cut your carbon footprint

Solar hot water is a green, renewable heating sytem and doesn’t release any harmful carbon dioxide or other pollutants. It will reduce your carbon footprint by around 325kg of carbon dioxide emissions per year (based on a 3 bed semi detached home)*.

Added value

With the introduction of Energy Performance Certificates (EPC's) for homes, buyers are now becoming more aware, and are looking for houses that are efficiently heated and can have a positive impact on the environment. Installing a renewable energy technology can have a positive impact on the value of your property too.

How Much Could I Save?

Solar Water Heating

The costs for a typical solar water heating system range from £4,000 - £5,000.

The system can provide up to 70% of your hot water needs throughout the year.

The £ savings and CO2 savings depend on what fuel you will be replacing.

Energy Savings Trust
Fuel DisplacedSavings Per YearCO2 Savings Per Year
Gas £65 325kg
Electricity £95 635kg
Oil £85 365kg
Solid £55 645kg

All savings are approximate and are based on the hot water heating requirements of a 3 bed semi detached home.

Solar Photovoltaics (PV)

The costs for installing a solar electricity system can be quite varied with an average system costing between £7,500 and £14,000.

Savings can be considerable – up to 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per year and around £250 off your electricity bill.

Air Source Heat Pumps

The cost for installing a typical system for a detached home ranges from £4,000 to £6,000. The running costs are about £440 per year depending on how well insultated the property is.

Savings can be considerable – up to 6 tonnes of CO2 and £870 per hear for a system that is replacing an electric heating system.

Energy Savings Trust
Fuel DisplacedSavings Per YearCO2 Savings Per Year
Gas £300 830kg
Electricity £870 6 tonnes
Oil £580 1.3 tonnes
Solid £55 5 tonnes

All savings are approximate and are based on air source heat pump providing 100% of space heating in a detached property.
